> Celebrated by album listeners worldwide, Longplay now brings its unique album-centric experience to the Mac — with powerful new integrations and native design excellence.

**Indie developer Adrian Schoenig is announcing the launch of Longplay for macOS**, a native Mac application that reimagines music listening for Apple Music users who value the album as a complete artistic work. The app will be available on the Mac App Store and via direct purchase starting on 15 July.

Already popular on iPhone and iPad, **Longplay strips away the noise of individual tracks, playlists, and algorithms to focus entirely on albums**.

## Key Features of Longplay for macOS

- **Native Mac Experience**: Built with AppKit and SwiftUI for a seamless, responsive interface
- **iCloud Sync**: Maintains collections, ratings, and play counts across iOS and macOS
- AI Integration: Built-in **MCP server** enables control through assistants like Claude and Raycast
- Automation-Ready: Full support for **Shortcuts** and **AppleScript** (ideal for Alfred and other Mac workflows)
- **Feature parity** with iOS, such as unique sorting options like “Negligence” and “Addiction” resurface forgotten favorites, infinite album shuffle, Spotlight support, scrobbling and accessibility support.

## Forward-Looking AI Integration

Longplay for Mac pioneers a new era of Mac apps with its built-in **MCP (Model Context Protocol) server** for modern AI assistants, such as Claude. This integration goes far beyond a chatbot — it’s a fusion of context, personalisation, and action:

Large language models (LLMs) bring an **understanding of the broader world of music** — genres, artists, styles, and even musical moods. This means you can ask for “a classic jazz album from the Blue Note era” or “something upbeat from the 80s” and get meaningful, context-aware results. Combine this with what Longplay knows about **your music** -- your albums, your collections, your listening history -- and then **act upon it**: Search your collection, queue up multiple records, create smart collections, ask about themes of last played albums, find the odd album out in your favourites, and so much more.

This is more than a technical novelty: it’s a glimpse of what Apple’s “smart Siri” could be — a context-aware music assistant that understands you and your music. With Longplay, the music experience feels yours.

## More Info

- **Availability**: Mac App Store and for direct purchase on [longplay.rocks](https://longplay.rocks).

## About Longplay

Longplay is designed for music lovers with substantial Apple Music or iTunes libraries who appreciate listening to complete albums. With its unique interface, Longplay focuses on rediscovering, organizing, and simply enjoying your collection of albums — treating them as the cohesive artistic statements they were meant to be.

The iOS app has garnered praise from its users and prominent Apple community voices, with Jason Snell of Six Colors declaring "Steve Jobs would have loved it," while publications have highlighted its "well-designed interface" and "thoughtful features," with MacStories noting how it "does such a great job of emphasizing album art."

With version 2.2, Longplay brings its album focus to Apple Vision Pro: the same features as on iOS and adding a rich **immersive experience** of your albums on a massive curved wall — which could be straight out of the Matrix.

On iOS, the 2.2 update greatly improves and extends the **Shortcuts** support with over two dozen new actions, opening up a variety of customisation and advanced use cases.

Standout features for **visionOS**:
- View and pick albums from an **immersive space** where the app breaks beyond the window and the albums wrap around you. [See video](https://vimeo.com/904694210).
- The "regular" app window has been **optimised for visionOS**, with ornaments and toggling between the album view and now playing mode in the same window.

Some examples of what's possible with **Shortcuts**:
- Create a pretty image of your recently listened albums, or share it as a weekly note, or add it to your diary.
- Smart ad-hoc collections: Search albums by artist, genre, year, metrics; then view them in the app, and play or add them to a collection.
- Tap your iPhone's Action Button to resume your last Longplay session if nothing is playing yet, or rate the current track if something is playing.

Details and other improvements:
- **Universal purchase** between iOS and visionOS
- Search/filter albums
- Sort albums by release year
- An album inspector to view tracks, playback stats, and edit some details

*This update will be available when Apple Vision Pro ships on 2nd February 2024.*

Longplay 2.1 adds interactive widgets for iOS 17 with [fabulous animations](https://vimeo.com/863056534) that also work very well in StandBy, let's you appreciate your album wall in the app without any UI chrome, and adds new Shortcuts actions.

Updated **Album Wall** widget:

- Shows a grid of albums, tapping one starts playing it, tapping it again will pause playback.
- Playback status is indicated by the album resizing, just as in the app. Like an adorable mini Longplay.
- This widget is now available in sizes small (9 albums), medium (18 albums), and large (36 albums).

All new **Now Playing** widget:

- Show the currently playing album, or suggests a random one, if nothing is playing; with play/pause button.
- Shuffle button to switch to a random album (disabled while album is playing; pause playback first)
- Shows a spider chart of the album's metrics (recency, memory, length, negligence, stars, addiction) – tap it or the album artwork to toggle between the two.
- Available in small and medium.

Other improvements in this update:

- The "My Library" dropdown will fade away as you scroll through your albums, giving you a pristine chrome-free look of just your albums (can be disabled in the settings).
- New Shortcuts actions.

_This update will be available when iOS 17 launches._

This version is a big update:

The stand-out new features are the Infinite Album Shuffle, an in-app Now Playing screen, the ability to create collections and manage the queue of albums.

It also adds iCloud sync of your collections and playback stats. It let's you see the track list of an album and rate individual tracks in-app. It adds new settings to auto-skip tracks below a certain rating or that are marked as explicit. It adds a CarPlay app to access your albums and collections right from the comfort of your driver's seat — perfect for road trips. It also adds Siri support and adds more Shortcuts. Lastly, you can now connect a Last.fm or Listenbrainz account to keep track of your listens.

The full list of additions is in the [changelog](/changelog/ios).

A lot of love and polish went into this update, iterating on the very helpful feedback from the beta testers, as well as from Apple designers in a WWDC Design Lab.

The update is free for existing users. The release date is 31 August 2023. The price of the app will go up to 6 USD that date (from 3.99).
